Pregnancy is the New Pink? |
Hey FGs!
So I think we all know how the media is: there is always some big, hyped-up story, that everyone is talking about for a moment until it becomes, well, yesterday's news. And lately everybody is talking about teen pregnancy - specifically, girls that have gotten pregnant on purpose. I think we've all heard about the alleged pregnancy pact in Massachusetts by now. But the weird thing is, a lot of people, experts even, are blaming it on Hollywood. With Jamie Lynn Spears' pregnancy, Juno, and a lot of stars like Angelina Jolie having babies, they says girls are picking up on it like the latest "it" bag. Personally, I think that's giving Hollywood way to much credit and teen girls way too little.
Sure, we all fall into celebrity trends from time to time. I had a few Britney Spears and Jennifer Aniston haircuts long ago, and I've been thinking of going plaid ever since I saw Vanessa Hudgens on the new CosmoGIRL!. Maybe we do try to emulate our fave celebs, but I don't think it goes much further than physical traits. Yea, Jamie Lynn is really popular these days, and Juno was totally cute, but do we really admire them based on their pregnant bellies? I'm not buying it.
It's a funny thought, since being a pregnant teen is such a social stigma, that girls would want to be pregnant. I could bore you with all the parental stats about graduation rates and the physical side effects, but we all know that worst part is the gossip and the major damage to your reputation. Even still, there are girls that want to go through with it. Maybe they just want love - from a baby, from their shaky boyfriend. Maybe it seems like a way to get stability, or attention, who knows. Reality check: becoming a mom is really hard, and it definitely won't solve your relationships. If you're boyfriend doesn't know your a Fab Gal, find someone new!
Anyways, I guess my point was this: girls are smart. Yea, we envy celebrities, but it stops and the fashion (and maybe their cute bf, too!). When we do something drastic, there's a deeper problem there. C'mon, Fab Gals are not shallow!
But what is your opinion, FGs? Do you think it's a trend? Have you known a teen that got pregnant on purpose" Let me know by posting a comment or by e-mail at fabgalsite@gmail.com.

Young at Heart |
Hey hey Fab Gals! Have you ever watched a little kid and noticed how comfortable they are in their own skin? I think it's so funny - they know themselves and what they need better than a lot of adults. I don't think you would ever catch a little kid pinching their fat in the mirror or overeating or getting mad at themselves. Kids have this amazing ability to know what their bodies need, no worries. It's intuition - but somewhere along the way we lose it. I know how it is, Fab Gals: life is really crazy. Once you start to grow up, there's school and friends and everything is changing all the time. There's a lot of pressure, and sometimes it feels amazing just to make it through the day in one piece! Don't get me wrong - there are major perks to being a teen. I know I didn't get a cell phone or to go to the mall by myself when I was 5. And it's nice to be away from time-outs and footie pajamas. Maybe, though, we can tap into some of the things that we knew as a kid. Intuitive eating, a new big movement in health, is a "no-diet" philosophy that is based on listening to your body, eating what you want, and stopping when you're full. Nobody knows how to do that better than a kid! Kids are truly free spirits - they live in the moment and are who they are, no complaints. And they enjoy themselves! There's no reason we can't have that too.
So go ahead Fab Gals- grab a jump rope. Make Kool-Aid. Wear jelly shoes. Then pick up your cell and go to the mall. Just remember: you know who you are and what you need, you just have to listen. Leave room for your imagination and room to grow. And always feel free to play. What about you, FGs? What do you miss about being a kid? What are the best (and worst) parts of being the age you are? Leave a comment to let me know what you think! xoxo The Fab Gal Labels: being yourself, fab gal, intuition, listening to your body, play |

It's (so) Easy Being Green |
Hello Fab Gals!
It seems like green is the hottest trend these days, and I'm not talking about the color. Everywhere you go, someone is selling something labeled "organic," "all-natural," or "eco-friendly," and all of the hottest celebs are driving hybrids and campaigning for polar bears. It can be hard to figure out what is the real deal... and what's just the latest fad. If you're thinking of jumping on the green wagon, here are my top tips for saving the environment the easy way (no tofu or organic undies required!). - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - You probably learned the three R's in kindergarten, and it was no mistake. The best way to do your part is to reduce what ends up in the landfill. Start dividing out your papers and plastics at home, then find a local recycling center.
- BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag) - When you go shopping, reduce the amount of bags you waste by bringing your own totes. There are all kinds of cute options, like the ones at Delight.com (that's where Cameron Diaz gets hers!).
- Unplug - When you're done with your electronics, don't just turn off - unplug 'em! They are still wasting energy, even if you hit the off switch. Or you can plug it all - your cell phone charger, blow dryer, etc. - into a power strip, and turn it off when you leave the room.
- The Light Switch - Switching your regular light bulbs to compact fluorescent ones can save a lot of energy over time. The curly bulbs look silly at first, but you really won't notice any difference.
- Water Works - Saving water is just as important as saving electricity. Cutting back your time in the shower by a few minutes and turning of the faucet when you're not using it has a big impact.
So there it is FGs - some easy tips for helping the environment and going green. I'm sure the polar bears will thank you for it. What have YOU done to go green, Fab Gal? Do you think this is a trend that will last? Leave a comment to let me know what you think! xoxo The Fab Gal PS - if you are a Myspace user, make sure to add me at http://www.myspace.com/thefabgal! We Rock! We Rock! We Rock On! |
Hey there Fab Gals!
I don't know about you, but I had to watch Camp Rock this weekend... and then two times more. I confess: I love musicals, and I love the Jonas Brothers. Even still, the reasons I loved it so much was I could totally relate to Mitchie, and I'm pretty sure every Fab Gal can in some way. Mitchie is a girl with a dream, who unfortunately has been "invisible" for too long. She keeps herself that way, because she's afraid. She's afraid the person she is isn't someone worth any attention, but she is so wrong. When we're not sure of ourselves, we do bad things - like lying that our mom is the president of Hot Tunes China when she's really a cook. Yikes! So some of us haven't gone that far, but we all know what it's like - lying, being with someone who's mean to us to be popular, hiding who we are, trying to blend in. But that is no way to live our lives. All movie long, we think: Gosh Mitchie! What are you doing? You are so talented and beautiful and unique! Why are you letting Tess push you around? You could be kissing Shayne right now! Okay, so that's what I was thinking. Of course, this is a movie - real life isn't as obvious sometimes. But for all you know, someone around you might be thinking the same thing. Once you decide to live your life your way, things will fall into place, and you won't have to be invisible. You, Fab Gal, deserve to be the star of your life - no one else! Who knows what's waiting for you - new friends, fabulous opportunities, a Jonas Brother - to stop hiding and start being who you want to be. What about you, FG? Did you watch Camp Rock? Love it? Hate it? Have you been hiding who you really are? Leave a comment to let me know (see the "how-to" guide on the left for help!). No more hiding who I want to be...This is me

Fab Gal Top 10: Music |
Bonjour Fab Gals!
Ok, so here is the weekly Top 10. This week, I am going to count down the top 10 FG songs to pump you up.
1. "Never Underestimate a Girl" - Vanessa Hudgens The name says it all! 2. "Nobody's Perfect" - Hannah Montana Okay, I just love all of Hannah's (or Miley's) music. So fun, and it all has a positive message to it. 3. "My Hallelujah Song" - Julianne Hough If you don't recognize Julianne, she was one of the dancers on Dancing with the Stars - and the next big thing in country. This song is so cute and sweet! 4. "A Place in This World" - Taylor Swift I think this one is basically my theme song. Taylor always knows just what to say, it's like she's read your diary. 5. "Crazy Dreams" - Carrie Underwood Carrie's crazy dreams certainly came true! This one is for anyone who has sung into their hairbrush and dreamed of winning American Idol. 6. "Walking on Sunshine" - Aly & AJ This one is a remake, and just as fun as a perfect summer day. 7. "In This Skin" - Jessica Simpson It's hard to believe that Jessica Simpson ever felt uncomfortable in her skin! It just goes to show that everyone feels that way. 8. "So Bring It On" - The Cheetah Girls These kitties are fierce! This song channels their can-do-anything attitude. 9. "That's Just the Way We Roll" - Jonas Brothers Okay, so I usually don't let boys on the countdown. But I love that the Jonas Brothers are totally crazy and totally cool with just hanging out being themselves. This song is about that. 10. "This is Me" - Demi Lovato Did you watch Camp Rock? I hope so! I loved it, and I haven't even seen the end yet. I love the message, and I love this song so much, I think I'm going to go download it now!
So that's my top 10 list of songs that make me feel totally Fab. But how about you FGs? What are your favorites? Leave a comment to let me know. (By popular demand, I put some instructions on the left panel in case you're not sure how to!).

Love It, Fix It, or Leave It |
Hola FGs!
So, I've just started reading this totally fab book, My Feet Aren't Ugly by Debra Beck, and I just had to share a bit of it with you. It's "a girl's guide to loving herself from the inside out." At first I was a little skeptical, especially when one of the "Think it Over" sections said to make one list of all the things you like about yourself...and another list of the things you don't like. Why would I want to do that? I was sure I could make a laundry list of dislikes. But wait a minute, what do I like about myself again? Yikes.
As I got started though, it wasn't as bad as I imagined. The two lists turned out pretty even, full of both physical attributes and otherwise. Next, the book instructed to give your dislikes a good once-over: everything you don't like should be easy to change or accept. So I looked at both lists, and realized that all the things I did like were significant - my creativity, my crazy/spontaneous side, my eyes. And the things I didn't like were either things just waiting to be fixed - my braces, my hair- or just side effects of me not liking myself, like being too guarded and not being confident. As it turns out, there's no reason I shouldn't like myself at all.
The title is really funny to me, because not too long ago my feet would have been highly ranked on the "dislike" list. I inherited every bad foot gene possible, and I seriously hoped that I could get them fixed one day. But you know what? I can run, I can dance, and I can walk in high heels. So now I love my little ugly feet. Enough to share them with you...
So remember Fab Gals, whatever you don't like yourself can be easily fixed, might just be an insecurity, or can just be loved for what it is, like those ugly feet of mine. But that's just my story. What about you? Are your dislikes holding you back? What do you absolutely love about yourself? I encourage you to make your lists, and let me know what you discover!
xoxo

It's Myspace, Not Yours |
Hey there Fab Gals!
So today I was watching the news, and I thought of you. They were covering the case of Megan Meier, who committed suicide after getting lots of nasty notes from a Myspace "friend," who she thought was 16 year-old Josh Evans but was actually a 49 year-old woman, her neighbor. It was such a sad, horrible thing to happen to a Fab Gal, but we can take something from this tragedy.
I don't want to sound like a mom, saying that Facebook and Myspace and all the social networking sites are ruing our generation. In fact, I think that these sites are great for talking to friends, sharing photos, and of course, keeping up with gossip (c'mon, you know you do it too). But you have to be careful; the web is NOT a good place meet someone new. What we love so much about these sites is the control we have over how people see us, but people can abuse that power, as in Megan's case. You, Fab Gal, do not need to be a victim, as long as you stay smart.
Here are the top FG tips for social networking safety:
- Don't add people you don't know - It might seem self-explanatory, but a lot of gals ignore this rule. The Internet might seem safe, but you have no clue what is really happening on the other side. Your mama said don't talk to strangers, and the Internet is no different.
- Watch what you put on your profile - Do not put any personal contact info, like your address or cell phone number on your page, and set your profile to private (each site will allow you to change security settings). And as a general guideline, don't put anything up you wouldn't want your grandma to see.
- Don't take nasty messages - If someone starts to harass you online, stop communications right away. Myspace, as well as the other sites, will let you block or report a cyber-bully.
- Listen to your intuition - If something or someone makes you feel uncomfortable, don't hesitate. Your intuition is usually right, so don't ignore it.
Hopefully that helps set you on the right path. Learn more about cyberbullying at STOP Cyberbullying. If you are a myYearbook user, sign the Megan Pledge to prevent cyberbullying. How about you, FG? Do you use Myspace, Facebook, myYearbook, or another social networking site? Leave a comment to let me know what you think about them. xoxo The Fab Gal FG Update: Check out the new poll feature located on the side! Labeled |
Hey there FGs!
I don't know about your school, but at ours, yearbooks are a BIG deal. Everyone loves to see how many times their picture got in, and they really love to guess what the theme will be, even though it's usually pretty silly. This year, the theme was "Labeled," and the cover was filled with all the things our student body can be labeled as. They were all nice things - outgoing, athletic, memorable - but it made me think: Are labels ever really a good thing?
We label people for convenience, like "Carrie, she's smart, she can help me with my math homework," or "Adrienne is a cheerleader, so she must know everyone at school." Athlete. Blonde. Nerd. Whatever. Especially when we're younger, and our world seems a little crazy, it makes things easier to just categorize people and not think about it.
Some labels are supposed to be positive, like the ones on our yearbooks, but there's a problem: they don't leave room for change. Sure, maybe today you are the shy, smart girl in the back of the class, but maybe tomorrow you want to be something different. Some will welcome the change, but people who are stuck on labels will miss it. Either way it doesn't really matter. It's like my friend J-Lo said: "You know who you are. Focus on that. Other people will see that eventually." It doesn't matter where you end up in the yearbook - how you see yourself is so much more important.
You, Fab Gal, are not a can of soup. You don't need to be labeled. Don't live up to someone's expectations - live up to your own. Don't be something - be yourself. Live above the labels and leave room for change.
How have you been labeled, FG? Do you put labels on other people? Are they really a bad thing? Leave a comment to let me know what you think.
xoxo

Fab Gal Top 10: Movies |
Hey Fab Gals!
It's time for the weekly top 10. This week I am going to count down the top 10 Fab Gal movies, all 100% fun, each with a kick-butt Fab Gal lead (and a happy ending, of course!).
1. Legally Blonde: I love this one! Elle Woods starts out really ditzy at first, and she chases a boy to Harvard (Bad Idea!). But in the end, she realizes she doesn't need him to be a fabulous, always-pink lawyer.
2. Miss Congeniality: An FBI agent turned beauty queen? No way. Of course, she is reluctant at first, but she learns a LOT about judging appearances (and what the pageant girls really use hairspray for...). 3. Hairspray: Super-fun music and a good music. Tracy Turnblad is a crazy girl trying to live her dream and have fun along the way. Sounds like some Fab Gals I know. 4. What a Girl Wants: Of course, I love Amanda Bynes! In this one, she gets in some wild situations as she tries to get to know her father - who happens to be royalty - and figure out who she is. Super-cute ending! 5. The Devil Wears Prada: Scary fashion villain alert! Andy Sachs tries to break into the journalism world by working at Runway magazine, but gets wrapped up in the superficial life of the fashion world. 6. Super Sweet 16: Based on the TV show, two best friends get in a major party war to have the biggest blow-out. Although the girls on the show never seem to learn, I promise this one turns out well! Plus - Aly & AJ rock!
7. Pillow Talk: If you don't know who Doris Day is, you should! She was an actress in the '60s, and the ultimate Fab Gal. Her characters were always classy, successful, and wouldn't fall into any guy's trap... until she falls in love. Aww! 8. A Cinderella Story: A modern-day version of the classic, starring one of my faves - Hilary Duff. It's safe to say that the evil stepmomgets what she deserves in the end, and the "princess" finds her Prince Charming. 9. The Little Mermaid: You've gotta love this one! My favorite part is that Ariel never stops dreaming or going on adventures. She wouldn't have found her prince if she didn't! 10. Mean Girls: Fab Gals gone bad! Cady learns her lesson after getting wrapped up in the glam but troubled life of "The Plastics." Very funny, too! Enough about me, what is on your Top 10 list, Fab Gal? Leave a comment to let me know! xoxo The Fab Gal PS - I'm going to be adding polls and working on the site to make this more fun and interactive for us. Comfortably Beautiful |
Hello my Fab Gals!
So, I was talking to a Fab Lady the other day, and she said something that made me think of you. She was talking about a woman that she admired, and she noticed how that woman always seemed "comfortable in her beauty." That stuck out in my mind. What does it mean, to be comfortable in your beauty? So I started thinking about the people in my life that I see as beautiful - my aunts, my cousins, a few friends - and as I imagined each one, I saw them smiling and happy.
That's when it occurred to me: a large part of beauty is being comfortable in your own skin. Sure, there is the 2-D kind of beauty that will get you on the cover of a magazine, but real beauty? It's so much more than that. Think about it - doesn't your vision of someone change once you know what they're really like? Zac Efron would become so un-cute if he turned out to be a total jerk. Beauty is the whole package, including confidence, happiness, and personality.
It's okay if you're not comfortable with your beauty right now. Most of us FGs aren't yet. We're still trying new things and figuring out who we are and want we want. Once you find your place and stop worrying about what others think, you'll feel a lot more confident, and it'll show. There isn't really any magic trick to improve your self-esteem instantly. All I can say is if you keep growing and exploring and treat your self they way you should, everything will fall into place, FG, and you'll see how beautiful you are.
Let's discuss Fab Gals. Leave a comment to let me know who the beautiful people in your life are. What makes them beautiful - their confidence, their happiness, their looks? How have they affected your life?
Can't wait to hear, FGs! Don't forget.. xoxo

Swimsuit Stress |
Hey there, FGs!
Isn't summer the best? No school, lots of sun, and time for all kinds of crazy adventures. But something a little Fab Gal said reminded me of one of the dangers of this season: swimsuit shopping. Two things you should know about me: I love swimming, and I love shopping even more. Despite that, I cringe at the thought of swimsuit shopping. I would probably do it blindfolded if I could. I don't know what it is - the fluorescent lighting, my pale winter skin - but it's just really horrible, isn't it? Unfortunately, we've all gotta do it, so here are my tips for making it as painless as possible... - Shop Online - If dressing rooms aren't for you, I would definitely recommend shopping online. That way, you can try things on in the comfort of your own room, plus you can try it on with different outfits. Bonus: most stores are nice about returns, so even if you decide to send it back, you won't have to pay extra shipping.
- Go with a Friend - If you do decide to hit the malls, why not make it a girls' trip? Go with someone who a) will be honest with you, and b) will make it as fun as possible. That way, you'll have a second opinion on hand, and you might even have a good time with it.
- Keep an Open Mind - There are so many options with suits, so you should definitely feel free to be bold. Who knows? You may find that the funky cut-out one piece is actually really cool, or that purple is one of your colors after all.
- Try on Lots - I know, I know. You want to just try on one as quickly as possible, decide it fits, and then get outta there. But you're going to be wearing your suit all summer, and you want to have something you love. You won't know what works for your body with out trying out all the possibilities.
- Don't Worry About Sizes - More than any other piece of clothing, it's really important that you find a suit that fits (You don't want to be featured in Seventeen's Embarrassing Moments article, do you?). So don't freak if you are wearing a size smaller or bigger than you're used to - or that your top and bottom sizes are different. If you're freaking about your size, cut out the tags when you get home - no one will see, and you can forget about it.
- Go with Confidence - Once you've got a suit picked out, wear it proudly! Summer goes quick, and you don't want to waste it covering with a towel poolside. Plus, nothing could make you look hotter than a confident attitude!
And here are some of my fave places to find a variety of fun, affordable, and totally fab suits: Good Luck Fab Gals! As always, keep in touch with me at fabgalsite@gmail.com.

Save the Drama for Your Mama |
Hey Fab Gals!
So summertime is in full swing, and I have been catching up on one of my guilty pleasure reads: the Gossip Girl books. I know they're bad, but I just can't help it - I love the fashion the romance, and most of all, the drama. Yes, we all secretly love a little drama, in real life or in books. But it got me thinking, why are we so hooked on it?
Sure no girl will admit it, but we do love to stir up trouble. Usually, the one who is rolling her eyes and saying, "Ugh, I'm sick of all this drama," is the Queen Bee herself. Let's just face it: we want to be noticed, we want people to be talking. And nothing draws attention quicker than a scandal, whether it's a cat-fight over a two-timing boyfriend or something that happened at that big party last weekend. Like they say in Hollywood, "There's no such thing as bad publicity."
But hold up for a sec, is that really true? Sure, gossip captures attention for now, but eventually, if you're the chica always causing a scene, you're rep is going to take a major blow. Like the Little Boy Who Cried Wolf, people will write you off, and you'll be in line with all of the Paris Hiltons and Lindsay Lohans of this world.
Believe it or not, there is another way, a better way, to get people to take notice: by staying out of all of they cattiness. By being your true self. By being confident and holding to your beliefs. The attention won't be as immediate, but eventually people will really respect you for it, and you will be noticed for the Fab Gal that you are, not for what you did last weekend. And that admiration will be long-lasting, and well worth the wait.
So Fab Gals, let's leave the drama to Gossip Girl and Grey's Anatomy and get the attention we really deserve - for being absolutely fabulous.

The Fab Gal Top 10 |
Hey Fab Gals!
So I want to tell you a little about my top 10. And we're not talking Myspace here. These are my top 10 Fab Gals - in no particular order.
1. Amanda Bynes - So I can't say I've ever met the real Amanda, but I love that in her movies she always represents a real girl - the one who's a little different, a little offbeat, but always 100% comfortable with who she is. A completely free spirit.
2. Atoosa - She's just plain cool! If you don't know who she is, she is the former editor of Seventeen and founded CosmoGIRL! magazine, two of my faves. What's even cooler though is that she left all that behind to work with her fellow Alpha Kitties. No clue what I'm talking about? Check out Atoosa's Myspace to learn a little more about it, then check out the Alpha Kitty YouTube show.
3. Hilary Duff - She's really come into her own. Even though everyone had a specific, cutesy image of her, she changed and redefined herself (in a good way). She's always classy, never trashy.
4. Dolly Parton - What a woman! There's a lot more to her than people expect. She's just as much smart and hardworking as she is blonde. Did you know she's published over 600 songs, including Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You"? Well believe it. Best of all, she's unaffected by what people say about her.
5. Jessica Weiner - The Queen Actionist herself! She has had a very unconventional career path, which led her to writing several books, including Do I Look Fat in This?, writing for Seventeen, and working with girls through her website, With Jess. You have got to check this girl out!
6. Taylor Swift - She is just so genuine. She's completely open and honest about who she is (you would have to be to sing about all your exes!). She's talented, beautiful, and happily living her dream, and still makes time to keep up with her fans through her Myspace.
7. Ellen Degeneres - Aside from being hilarious, she makes no apologies for who she is, because she knows you never should. Plus she dances. Every day. On national TV. Make sure you check out the Ellen Degeneres Show, it's 100% feel-good.
8. Miley Cyrus - So you already know this, but this girl amazes me. For being so young, she is so classy and down to earth. She works hard for her success, but she also has so much fun with it. Sure, she makes mistakes, but that just makes her more real.
9. Hayden Panettiere - Wow, this girl is gutsy! Once I heard about how she risked her safety for the dolphins, I had so much respect for her. She has a big heart and she takes action (and always looks fab doing it!).
10. Marilyn Monroe - This might seem like a controversial one. What I love about her though is that she's beautiful, but it's a real beauty, not a stick-skinny phoney-baloney beauty. And when you hear the things she said, she was actually really insightful about life. Classy, glamorous, talented, and smart.
So Fab Gals, that's my Top 10. But who's on yours? What makes the people that you admire so Fab?
Let me know, and as always, you can e-mail any questions/suggestions/whatever to me at fabgalsite@gmail.com

The Miley Cyrus Media Circus |
Hey Fab Gals! So I try my best to stay aways from the celebrity gossip scene, because I know how nasty and (mostly) untrue it is. But there was one recent piece that caught my attention: the Miley Cyrus photos. There was the infamous Vogue shoot, but even before that there were some silly pictures of her and her friends at a slumber party. After the first set, people labeled her as gross, inappropriate, and a lesbian. Then after the Vogue pics, outrage ensued – and people were calling to have her kicked of Hannah Montana.
What this made me wonder is this: Why are we so angry? Sure, over the past year, Miley has become a role model for millions of young girls, and I think for the most part she has been a stellar one. But she also a 15 year-old, a living, breathing teenage girl. She won’t get it right all the time. But we put celebrities at this super-high level, like they’re our Barbie dolls, or the cool kids we’ll never be. Then when they fall down, it’s hard to remember that they really aren’t part of a different world. Maybe it’s jealousy, maybe it’s our expectations for ourselves, whatever – but it’s not fair. Then when parents started calling for her to be removed from her own show, I was stunned. Of course, they were worried about what kind of example she was setting for their daughters, but what message would it send if they kicked her off? That if you mess up, that’s it – no second chances? I’ll be perfectly honest: I know that somewhere, in the messy corners of my closet, that I too have some silly, goofy photos from slumber parties past that yea, okay, I would be really embarrassed if anyone saw. But that doesn’t make me a bad girl, and I would like to think that no one would respect me any less if they got into the wrong hands. Fab Gals are bound to mess up, but they know that it’s all about handling your mistakes with style and class. Miley proved her Fab Gal status – she apologized to whomever she offended, learned her lesson, and moved on. Case closed. What do you think Fab Gal, do we put too much pressure on young celebs? How would you want to be treated if you were in Miley’s position? How do you handle your slip-ups? Let me know what you think FGs, and check back tomorrow for the countdown of my top 10 fave Fab Gals. xoxo The Fab Gal P.S. - Below is a video of the Miley & Mandy show, Miley Cyrus’s Youtube web show with her BFF. Totally unrelated, but it’s fun to see what two Fab Gals will do with a camera…

Let's Take on the Media |
Do you believe everything you see? Or rather, do you buy everything you are sold? The media is a powerful thing, and unless you’ve been living in a cave, it’s pretty much unavoidable. TV, billboards, magazines, those signs on the side of the bus – they’re everywhere, 24/7. And they’re always selling something. As much as I’d love to believe that we don’t buy into it all – the diet pills and the waif-y models – we must, because otherwise the selling would stop.
Well there is a new movement against all of that – Time magazine calls it body activism, or a type of civil disobedience against the nasty media. High school and college girls have been participating in a program called the Body Project, with a high success rate at preventing eating disorders. They talk about and critique the images they have been sold, but here is the intriguing part: they have to come up with some type of nonviolent act against the media they disprove of, like leaving body-love notes in the diet books at a bookstore or writing letters to Mattel about Barbies. Since I’m always one to stir up some good trouble, I had to try it for myself. On a recent afternoon shopping trip, I pulled out my pen and notepad and headed to Barnes & Noble. I wrote out just a few notes, like “You are too beautiful to waste life dieting,” and when the coast was clear I snuck over to the Diet section (btw – I’m not sure why I was sneaking around, since it’s obviously not illegal. It just felt like I was breaking some sort of code, like “The Media” is the Godfather that’s always watching). Anyways, I decided to find the trashiest diet books possible, and was shocked to find how easy it was. They were everywhere – the “Fat Flush Diet,” the “Hot Latin Diet,” the “Skinny Bitch Diet.” None of them sounded healthy or normal, or very nice for that matter. It was a little sad to think, Are we that desperate to be thin that we are going to buy into something that doesn’t even sound healthy? And what does the Skinny Bitch know that I don’t? So if you need a reality check, I would definitely recommend this exercise. It’s eye-opening to see what we have been buying into. But what do YOU think Fab Gal? Is the media to blame for our negative body images? What have you been sold that you really don’t want to believe in? Most importantly, how do we change it? I’d love to hear from you FGs, and as always I can be reached at fabgalsite@gmail.com. xoxo The Fab Gal Check out the article in Time, Taking on the Thin Ideal Labels: body activism, fab gal, media, Time |

Are YOU a Fab Gal? |
Hey ladies!
So doesn't it seem like it's getting a lot harder to be a girl these days? I mean, doors are open for us where they weren't for women before us, but with those opportunities comes a lot more expectations. We are supposed to get straight-As, be extra-involved in school, and have bundles of friends... all while maintaining our perfect hair and walking in heels. Parents, teachers, peers, what we see on TV - it packs on the pressure, doesn't it?
And let's be perfectly honest - sometimes the pressure gets the best of us. We get catty and spread rumors to bring other chicas down. We let loose and are faced with regret... and the evidence on Myspace. Our bodies become the enemy in our fight to look like Giselle. Yep, sometimes we do un-fabulous things in an effort to be the best - the prettiest, most popular, smartest, whatever.
But let me let you in on a little secret: We are not perfect. Nor should we ever wish to be. We each have our goofy little quirks and imperfections - that's what makes us real. But it is time we realize that we are Fab Gals. We have unique talents, we have smarts, and we are beautiful. And pretty soon the world will be in our hands - and we don't want to leave it to the boys, do we? I didn't think so. It's time we joined together and started acting like the Fab Gals we know we are.
That's where this site comes in - a place for us to start the conversation. Because I know FGs have a LOT to say about our world. So leave your comments, suggestions, questions, anything, and click around the cool links on the side. And check back often, because Fab Gal? This is only the beginning for us...
xoxo
