| Believe in Me |
"I think that the only person who really doesn't trust you is you."
That's what went through my brain the other day, in the middle of pancakes and Good Morning America. I was eating breakfast, and already the running list of what I was up against for the day, the week was going through my head. Science project, boys, working out... Doesn't sound so bad. But I was really scared. I was sure I couldn't handle any of it, that nothing would go quite right.
And you know what? Maybe that feeling is completely normal. But it's all in how you translate it. It can either be, "Gosh, this must be really important to me. Let's see what I can do." Or it could be,"I am so stressed out. There's no way I can do any of this right."
Anyways, where I was going is this: I wonder how many times we think we're coming up against big obstacles, but we're really just setting up our own battles. Think about it - have you ever admitted to someone that you were worried you were gaining weight, or you sure you were going to mess up an audition, and they acted like they had no idea what you were talking about? Well, that's probably because they can really see how amazing and wonderful and talented you really are. Or think about this - have you ever had a friend or aunt tell you they think you're really beautiful, and you didn't believe it? Well, maybe it's true. And maybe right not the only person who doesn't believe in you, support, you, and have 100% trust and faith in you is, well... you.
Have you had one of those days lately, FG? Who is someone that does believe in you? Let me know what you think - I'm always here or at my e-mail, fabgalsite@gmail.com.

| I Love You, Me! |
Hello FGs!
You know, people always say "self-obsessed" like its a bad thing. Okay, so sometimes it probably is. You may not want to be like Tawny from Sonny With a Chance (a new favorite of mine!) who carriers a mirror in her pocket just to take glances at herself. But sometimes, I really think girls don't take it far enough. You are the only you you've got, if that makes sense. And you're absolutely fabulous. I would be obsessed, if I were you. So here are a few things that FGs with the right amount of self-obsession know how to do:
- Appreciate Your Body - Swimsuit season is rapidly approaching, and sometimes the thought of showing that much skin can be a little more than scary. But you have to know that what you have is just fine, maybe even great. And you can feel okay showing off as little or much as you want. Easier said than done, I know. I wish I could tell you a magic trick for instant body-love, but if there is one, nobody has ever told me about it. Really it just takes practice. Some girls like to make lists of their favorite parts, or find a sport that makes them feel good. You'll get there. Check out this clip from Real Women Have Curves for some inspiration.
- Make Your Own Decisions - It's easy to go with the flow and do what your girls or your family is doing, or even to let people kinda make up your mind for you. But the only way to decide who you want to be is to, well, make decisions for you. Try things out. That can be as simple as deciding to buy Taylor Swift when all your friends are listening to Paramore, or something bigger, like deciding to go out for softball or try out for the school musical. Who knows? You might really like where it takes you - and the you that's waiting on the other side.
- Let Others Help You - This might seem like a misfit on this list. But I think that so many people don't do this enough. I know for me, I do sometimes worry about being a burden or a bother to someone. But have you ever thought it was a big pain when your BFF came to you for help? Of course not! Let the people who love you do so - your friends, your family would love to give you advice or a hand up. You may not realize how "you-obsessed" they already are.

| Lost in Translation |
Hey FGs!
I think that everyone at some time has looked in the mirror and said to themselves, "Oh, I look so gross today," or maybe groaned to a friend, "I feel fat!" Okay, maybe not everyone, at least I hope not, but it does seem to be pretty common. I remember once hearing it referred to as another language - of fat talk. And if you think about it, that makes a lot of sense. There's all kinds of languages - gossip, diet talk. And it's so easy to pick up on - especially on the news and TV, these are hot topics. Is that really a problem? Maybe not. Until it becomes a way of speaking, not just a passing idea.
You see, sometimes these things that we say are just one way of saying something else. Fat is not actually a feeling. So I hear. I know that can seem hard to believe -like, No, but I really really do feel fat. But that's just what you think in translation.
So how do you make the switch? It's starts with just being aware, and thinking, Okay, what's really the sitch? Because focusing on dieting or weight or looks as a solution only makes sense when you think that you are feeling "fat" or "ugly." But what if you were really feeling sad, scared, worried, or worthless? Well, then you would probably have to find another solution, beyond dieting. But of course, that just does not seem as easy sometimes.
Switching from diet talk, fat talk, gossip talk, or any other type of harmful talk is hard, especially when you've become a native speaker. I know. Moving to a place of appreciating yourself and listening to what you would actually say if you weren't saying it in those ways is difficult. But it's a trip worth making.

| Easier Said Than Done |
Hey FGs!
So I just went to see Confessions of a Shopaholic this weekend. Loved it! So cute. Most of all, I loved the main girl, Rebecca - she was so sweet, and crazy, and fashion-obsessed. . . and really bad at following her own good advice. And that made her so real.
In the movie, Rebecca is a writer who dishes out financial help that people can actually follow, while she herself is stuck in major debt. When she got caught, people thought she was just a big phony. But I don't think she was at all. In fact, I think a lot of us are like this. I think we so often know what the right answers are, and if a friend asked for our help, we could come up with a clear solution. So why can't we take our own advice?
I think maybe it's a matter of really believing in yourself. Think about if a gal pal came up and asked you if you thought she should maybe go on a diet and lose some weight. You would probably say No Way! You would probably then remind her how beautiful you think she is, and tell her she is too great to deserve to waste her time, trying to change who she is. But what about yourself? If you were feeling that way, could you look yourself in the mirror and tell yourself those things?
Or maybe it's not a matter of having faith in yourself, but just being too close - like standing too close to a painting to really see how it all works together. Maybe when we have a problem, it's time to take a step back, look in, and realize you're good enough for your own advice too.

xoxo

| Speaking Up for Real Beauty |
Hey hey FGs!
I have been so fascinated lately by all the talk going on about Jessica Simpson, and the recent photographs that everyone seems to have a comment on. Her outfit has been bashed, and her body picked apart and labeled - everything from "curvy" to "fat." Normally, I would say it's just best to stay away from this kind of media and the nasty body talk. It just perpetuates our ideas about beauty, weight, and what's considered ac ceptable to say about other people. But I'll admit - I've been obsessed, clicking on every Jessica link I've seen (believe me, there are quite a few!). It's just so strange. We always say that we are so over the skinny thing, and everyone tears apart the stick-thin celebs. But if someone does look normal, whether or not she has gained weight, everyone feels they have the right to call her a pig. No wonder we are all so confused about beauty. But as I was on my celebrity gossip frenzy, I found on article on Us Magazine's website. They talked about her "new curves" in some back-handed way to seem nice. But when I scrolled to the bottom, so many people had left comments. And most of them were talking back. They said things about how she looked beautiful the way she is, but that it really isn't our right in the first place to decide what her body should look like. And I am so glad these people chose to say (or type) what they did. You see, you can try to stay away from the negative media all you want. But sooner or later, you have to face it. So I think the better approach is to face it - and speak up when you see something you don't like. Things won't go away just because you ignore them. Now, I understand that speaking up may not change the way the media works. But it will give you the power to have your own voice and make your own decisions about what beauty means to you. And that's beautiful in itself. xoxo The Fab Gal Labels: beauty, celebrities, fab gal, gossip, Jessica Simpson, media, self-confidence, weight issues |

| Written on Your Hand |
Hello FGs!
It was one of those days: I was squishing my face in the mirror (sometime between tooth brushing and eyebrow plucking, I believe), deciding what new flaws had popped up. I don't know where I picked up this routine - nobody is ever that close to my face, and if they were, well, I guess they would either be kissed or slapped. Anyways, on this day I decided that one of my front teeth was longer than the other, and they were kinda a different color on the bottom.
Later that day, I went to get my palm read. Before you write me off, I'm really not this crazy, superstitious chick. But I have to try everything once, and I was really curious about this. And I was shocked at how amazingly accurate it was. I obviously don't know if the part about my future was true, but everything the palm reader said about my personality was spot-on.
Even though I should have been happy to know that I would get the job I want, find my soulmate, and live to 86, I was stuck. Everything I know is true, he said - I can be stubborn, and overly energetic to the point of being fidgety or impatient. And apparently, I will be 12 for the rest of my life (I still don't know what that means!). Great. So all of my flaws are written out on my hand for anyone to see. And then I realized that in thinking this way, I was doing the exact same thing I was doing in front of the mirror - picking out every little flaw. And blowing it up with a magnifying glass. Now, I think that a big part of self-acceptance comes from knowing what your flaws are, and being okay with them. But at the same time, turning those negatives into the whole picture won't make you happy, and it isn't even realistic. I mean, really - being young and energetic for the rest of my life? Not such a bad thing. xoxo The Fab Gal Labels: acceptance, fab gal, girls, life lessons, self esteem, self-confidence, teens |

| The Barbie Philosophy |
Hello FGs!
So they say "Beauty is only skin deep," and "It's what's on the inside that counts." But how true is that, really? Does the way we look not matter at all? Is it possible that our outsides do affect us, at least a little bit?
Now, before you write me off, I would say that I really don't consider myself to be shallow or only skin-deep. But I think it's possible that our outsides (the way we look) and our insides (who we are) are a little bit connected. Sometimes, I live by what I call the "Barbie philosophy": Change your look, change your life. When Barbie changes outfits, she changes careers. Often when I'm trying to make a change in my life, or have some really big event coming up, I get a new outfit (or hairdo, or hair color) to match what new attitude I'm trying to project. It doesn't make the change, of course, but it kind of. . . completes it. It's like an actress getting into a part - you really can't be the Wicked Witch without a pointy hat and green make-up. Maybe that's a silly comparison. But I think how we appear can sometimes reflect who we are, or where we are in the process of figuring that out. At least a little bit.
How much do our outsides affect how we are on the inside? Probably only as much as we think it does. I think that sometimes it's okay to let an outside change give us that extra boost of confidence - so long as we don't forget that it's just a tiny reflection of who we are as a whole. And at that rate, I I think our insides have a reverse power on our outsides. Because when you feel confident and happy, you glow. And that's true beauty, inside and out, FG.
xoxo

| Living the Life of Your Dreams |
Hey FGs!
One of the most important things that I've learned, and a lesson I'd love to share with you, is this - in all things in life, you will only get as much as you think you deserve. It's quite simple, but I've seen it play out again and again.
Here's how it works: if you're feeling fabulous and good about yourself, you take care of yourself, go after your dreams, and surround yourself with people who love and respect you. On the flip side, when you feel bad about yourself, you don't respect your needs and wishes. You allow for things to fall short and for negative or harmful relationships. It seems like that's just the way it is - like you don't deserve any better. But of course, you do. In fact, you probably have a lot more power over your life than you think.
Here's the sweet deal about this lesson - once you realize it's true, you can begin to make small changes. Use this to your advantage. There's so much for you to do and have and experience - dreams, goals, people that you've been holding yourself from because you didn't know you deserve them. Things won't be insta-perfect. But as you begin to realize what a rock star you really are, things will start to work out as you wish. Because the secret to living the life of your dreams? That's you, Fab Gal.
xoxo

| New Places, New Faces |
Hey my FGs!
So I don't know where your adventures are taking you this year, but I am sure most of you have started school by now, or will be soon. I know what you're thinking - school is not an adventure. But it most definitely can be, even if you're at the same school as last year. Whatever you do, I am sure you will end up meeting some new people. I think it can be one of the most difficult things - especially in a new situation - to figure out how to make conversation and leave a good impression. I am still trying to figure that one out! But here are my tips to help you a little when you're stuck, and I'm sure you've got some you can share too...
- Show Interest - Even if you are a shy gal, and the other person is a big talker, it's okay. Just show that you are an attentive listener - even just smiling, nodding, or saying "okay," or "cool!" (when appropriate) shows that you care what they are saying, so they don't take your shyness for aloofness.
- Have Background Info - If you are in an interview or some other formal situation, it's good to know what you are talking about! Look over information about the club or business so you can talk, but also so you know if you have questions (a great way to keep the convo moving!).
- Just Talk - If things feel weird or awkward, don't freak - there is always some level of weirdness when you're talking to someone for the first time. Try to think of something to say, if you can - even if it's just about the latest episode of your fave reality show or something funny that happened to you that day. You might be surprised what you have in common!
- Compliments Work - People love to feel good, so if you need a way to start up a convo, compliment someone, even if it's just a "Hey, great shoes!" It makes them feel special, and it gives you somewhere to start. But be genuine - people can usually tell when you're being fake.
- Be Yourself! - I hate when people say this, but it is so true. Sure, being yourself means that not everyone is going to love you. That's just the cold truth. But if you just relax and be natural, you won't feel like you need to keep up an appearance, and you will certainly stand out from the crowd.
How about you, Fab Gals? What do you do or say when you're meeting new people? Leave a comment to share (there are instructions on the side if you don't know how!). xoxo The Fab Gal Labels: conversation, fab gal, first impressions, meeting new people, self-confidence |

| Queen of the Busy Bees |
Bonjour Fab Gals!
I just want to say I am sorry I haven't made all of the updates (yet) that I was hoping to do by summer's end. I promise, I have some big plans for The Fab Gal! I have been at a 3-week camp, and it has been absolute craziness! I won't go through all the details right now. But this being my last week of camp, I wanted to use today to tell you all about something I learned, and the wonderful insight I have gained from my stay.
The thing is, I have been too busy to even think of what that might be!
Seriously, I have not had time available to think. I haven't sat down to write since I have been here, really, between roller skating and class and swing dancing, and all the spontaneous plans in between. I pretty much have been running on 5 hours a night and lots of Diet Coke.
Anyways, it's been a really good thing for me, I think. It's like that John Lennon quote, "Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans." Life has definitely been happening, no matter what my original plans were. And sometimes, it really is better to just be, you know? I live with my head in the clouds a lot. But it can be smart (if not a little scary) to stop thinking and wishing and learning and waiting, and just do. Even if you don't know exactly what it is you're doing, or where you're going, or what's coming next.
Keep that in mind Fab Gals, wherever you're at this new year. It seems like we always make school about organization and plans. Of course, those are good things. But it's cool to just throw yourself into a new situation, whenever you can. The people you'll meet and the experiences you'll have are what really make up your story. Who doesn't want some adventure?

| Just Do It, Please |
Hello Fab Gals!
It's so easy in life to just stick with what you know, and never step out of your comfort zone. I mean, if things are just fine as is, why change it up? Because you'll never grow if you never take risks. I feel like I'm always creating my own trouble, but it's a good thing, because I'm constantly learning and growing. If there's one thing I've learned over the last few years, it's that you'll never get anywhere by staying in place.
Of course, the thing with risks is this - there's a chance that things won't work out. I was always thought of as really shy, so when I wanted to try out for the cheer squad, people didn't take it seriously. When tryouts came, I stepped out of my element, went for it... and didn't make the squad. Last year, the school dance was fast approaching, and I was still 100% dateless. So I thought, why not go get one myself? I was so nervous when I dialed the number, of N, one of my guy friends, but I maintained a casual and cool tone... and he turned me down.
You might be thinking, Okay this girl is either a total blonde or really crazy if she hasn't figured it out yet. Both of those are at least a little true. But the amazing thing is this - good things came out of both situations. I didn't make the team on my first try, but I worked my booty off and made the squad the next year. Now I know I can do basically anything with a little hard work. I was dateless for the dance, but N had a lot of respect for me, and know I now what it's like to be in the boy's position.
It can be really hard to break out of your box, but it is so, so worth it. If I didn't learn to take risks, I wouldn't be talking to you today! So Fab Gals, is there a place in your life where you can take a good risk? How would you feel if you tried something new? Pretty Fab, I bet.

| Do You Have "It"? |
Hey hey FGs!
We all love to talk about them. Sometimes we wish we could be them. The "it" girls of Hollywood - Miley, Rihanna, Hayden, Vanessa - so big you can forget their last names. We're obsessed, and maybe it's not such a bad thing. They have it - and you want it. And believe me, Fab Gals, you've definitely got it. Here's how to release your inner It Girl:
- Define your own style - Okay, so maybe they've got professional stylists and designer labels. Still, it doesn't seem to matter what they wear - they just look awesome! It's because they know what they like, and they wear it. Trendy doesn't stand out - defining your own style does.

- Own the Room - When they walk in, they're seen. But not because they make a scene. They've got confidence, and they're secure in themselves. So walk tall and smile, because you rock!
- Take the High Road - Sometimes, even the It Girls do something embarrassing. When that happens though, they don't lash out. They stay classy, and they learn from their mistakes, which makes all the difference.
- R-E-S-P-E-C-T - For themselves and for others. No bashing other girls, for sure. They also have the self-respect to take care of themselves and keep on the right track. Not always easy, but it pays off in the end.
- Work it! - What makes you different? What are you really good at? Use it! It girls know what their strengths are, and they rock what they've got! Showing off your skills will definitely make you stand out - in a good way.
You've got "it," Fab Gals, now it's time to go out there and use it! And keep me updated here or at fabgalsite@gmail.com. xoxo The Fab Gal Labels: fab gal, individuality, it girls, self-confidence |

| We Rock! We Rock! We Rock On! |
Hey there Fab Gals!
I don't know about you, but I had to watch Camp Rock this weekend... and then two times more. I confess: I love musicals, and I love the Jonas Brothers. Even still, the reasons I loved it so much was I could totally relate to Mitchie, and I'm pretty sure every Fab Gal can in some way. Mitchie is a girl with a dream, who unfortunately has been "invisible" for too long. She keeps herself that way, because she's afraid. She's afraid the person she is isn't someone worth any attention, but she is so wrong. When we're not sure of ourselves, we do bad things - like lying that our mom is the president of Hot Tunes China when she's really a cook. Yikes! So some of us haven't gone that far, but we all know what it's like - lying, being with someone who's mean to us to be popular, hiding who we are, trying to blend in. But that is no way to live our lives. All movie long, we think: Gosh Mitchie! What are you doing? You are so talented and beautiful and unique! Why are you letting Tess push you around? You could be kissing Shayne right now! Okay, so that's what I was thinking. Of course, this is a movie - real life isn't as obvious sometimes. But for all you know, someone around you might be thinking the same thing. Once you decide to live your life your way, things will fall into place, and you won't have to be invisible. You, Fab Gal, deserve to be the star of your life - no one else! Who knows what's waiting for you - new friends, fabulous opportunities, a Jonas Brother - to stop hiding and start being who you want to be. What about you, FG? Did you watch Camp Rock? Love it? Hate it? Have you been hiding who you really are? Leave a comment to let me know (see the "how-to" guide on the left for help!). No more hiding who I want to be...This is me

| Love It, Fix It, or Leave It |
Hola FGs!
So, I've just started reading this totally fab book, My Feet Aren't Ugly by Debra Beck, and I just had to share a bit of it with you. It's "a girl's guide to loving herself from the inside out." At first I was a little skeptical, especially when one of the "Think it Over" sections said to make one list of all the things you like about yourself...and another list of the things you don't like. Why would I want to do that? I was sure I could make a laundry list of dislikes. But wait a minute, what do I like about myself again? Yikes.
As I got started though, it wasn't as bad as I imagined. The two lists turned out pretty even, full of both physical attributes and otherwise. Next, the book instructed to give your dislikes a good once-over: everything you don't like should be easy to change or accept. So I looked at both lists, and realized that all the things I did like were significant - my creativity, my crazy/spontaneous side, my eyes. And the things I didn't like were either things just waiting to be fixed - my braces, my hair- or just side effects of me not liking myself, like being too guarded and not being confident. As it turns out, there's no reason I shouldn't like myself at all.
The title is really funny to me, because not too long ago my feet would have been highly ranked on the "dislike" list. I inherited every bad foot gene possible, and I seriously hoped that I could get them fixed one day. But you know what? I can run, I can dance, and I can walk in high heels. So now I love my little ugly feet. Enough to share them with you...
So remember Fab Gals, whatever you don't like yourself can be easily fixed, might just be an insecurity, or can just be loved for what it is, like those ugly feet of mine. But that's just my story. What about you? Are your dislikes holding you back? What do you absolutely love about yourself? I encourage you to make your lists, and let me know what you discover!
xoxo

| Comfortably Beautiful |
| Hello my Fab Gals!
So, I was talking to a Fab Lady the other day, and she said something that made me think of you. She was talking about a woman that she admired, and she noticed how that woman always seemed "comfortable in her beauty." That stuck out in my mind. What does it mean, to be comfortable in your beauty? So I started thinking about the people in my life that I see as beautiful - my aunts, my cousins, a few friends - and as I imagined each one, I saw them smiling and happy.
That's when it occurred to me: a large part of beauty is being comfortable in your own skin. Sure, there is the 2-D kind of beauty that will get you on the cover of a magazine, but real beauty? It's so much more than that. Think about it - doesn't your vision of someone change once you know what they're really like? Zac Efron would become so un-cute if he turned out to be a total jerk. Beauty is the whole package, including confidence, happiness, and personality.
It's okay if you're not comfortable with your beauty right now. Most of us FGs aren't yet. We're still trying new things and figuring out who we are and want we want. Once you find your place and stop worrying about what others think, you'll feel a lot more confident, and it'll show. There isn't really any magic trick to improve your self-esteem instantly. All I can say is if you keep growing and exploring and treat your self they way you should, everything will fall into place, FG, and you'll see how beautiful you are.
Let's discuss Fab Gals. Leave a comment to let me know who the beautiful people in your life are. What makes them beautiful - their confidence, their happiness, their looks? How have they affected your life?
Can't wait to hear, FGs! Don't forget.. xoxo

| Save the Drama for Your Mama |
| Hey Fab Gals!
So summertime is in full swing, and I have been catching up on one of my guilty pleasure reads: the Gossip Girl books. I know they're bad, but I just can't help it - I love the fashion the romance, and most of all, the drama. Yes, we all secretly love a little drama, in real life or in books. But it got me thinking, why are we so hooked on it?
Sure no girl will admit it, but we do love to stir up trouble. Usually, the one who is rolling her eyes and saying, "Ugh, I'm sick of all this drama," is the Queen Bee herself. Let's just face it: we want to be noticed, we want people to be talking. And nothing draws attention quicker than a scandal, whether it's a cat-fight over a two-timing boyfriend or something that happened at that big party last weekend. Like they say in Hollywood, "There's no such thing as bad publicity."
But hold up for a sec, is that really true? Sure, gossip captures attention for now, but eventually, if you're the chica always causing a scene, you're rep is going to take a major blow. Like the Little Boy Who Cried Wolf, people will write you off, and you'll be in line with all of the Paris Hiltons and Lindsay Lohans of this world.
Believe it or not, there is another way, a better way, to get people to take notice: by staying out of all of they cattiness. By being your true self. By being confident and holding to your beliefs. The attention won't be as immediate, but eventually people will really respect you for it, and you will be noticed for the Fab Gal that you are, not for what you did last weekend. And that admiration will be long-lasting, and well worth the wait.
So Fab Gals, let's leave the drama to Gossip Girl and Grey's Anatomy and get the attention we really deserve - for being absolutely fabulous.
How does drama affect your life? Do you know someone that will do anything to get noticed? What is your fave (fictional) drama fix?
Give me the scoop FGs, and keep in touch with me at fabgalsite@gmail.com.
